2025 FAILED COUP IN NIGERIA: Unpacking the Allegations and Aftermath

October 26, 2025 | politics | 👁 154

A plot to overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu was allegedly foiled in October 2025. Reports suggest a group of military officers, including senior officials, were arrested and detained for their alleged involvement in the coup plot.
The Alleged Coup Plot
The plot, reportedly planned for October 1, 2025, aimed to overthrow President Tinubu and install a military government. Intelligence agencies claimed that the officers involved were dissatisfied with the current government's handling of the country's affairs.
The Role of Defence Intelligence
Major General Emmanuel Akomaye Parker Undiandeye, Chief of Defence Intelligence, reportedly played a key role in uncovering the plot and alerting the government. Despite the failed coup, Undiandeye retained his position after President Tinubu sacked top service chiefs.
Government Response
The Nigerian government and military have consistently denied the existence of a coup plot, describing the arrests as part of a routine internal disciplinary process.
Implications and Concerns
The alleged coup plot has raised concerns about the stability of Nigeria's democracy and the potential for further unrest. Some analysts have suggested that the plot may be linked to deeper issues, such as perceived marginalization and career stagnation among military officers.
As the situation continues to unfold, Nigerians and international observers alike are watching closely to see how the government and military respond to the allegations.
