Jigawa State has taken a bold step to confront its literacy crisis with the launch of JigawaUNITE, a new education reform initiative in partnership with global education company NewGlobe. The program aims to transform learning outcomes in a state where seven out of every eight children are unable to read or write in English or Hausa.

Despite allocating ₦120 billion to education in the 2025 budget, Jigawa has continued to face low literacy and numeracy levels. JigawaUNITE is designed to change this narrative by introducing technology-powered, data-driven teaching solutions that improve classroom delivery and student performance across the state.

The initiative will begin in more than 1,000 public schools, using NewGlobe’s digital education platform to support teachers with structured lessons, continuous coaching, and real-time student performance tracking. This approach ensures that learning gaps are identified early and addressed effectively.

According to Jay Kimmelman, Group CEO of NewGlobe, the partnership goes beyond policy and funding.

«“Education is the strongest driver of economic growth and social development. JigawaUNITE is about giving every child the tools to succeed, empowering teachers, and building communities that can thrive.”»

Education stakeholders say the program reflects the Jigawa State Government’s renewed commitment to long-term education reform, accountability, and measurable impact. By combining funding with technology and evidence-based strategies, the state is positioning itself as a model for education transformation in northern Nigeria.

The launch of JigawaUNITE underscores how innovative partnerships and bold leadership can address long-standing challenges in public education. With a strong focus on literacy, numeracy, and teacher effectiveness, the initiative aims to ensure that no child in Jigawa State is left behind.

As implementation begins, expectations are high that JigawaUNITE will deliver lasting improvements in learning outcomes and set a new standard for technology-enabled education reform in Nigeria.
